This first letter of Peter reflects a time of suffering and trial. No doubt the widespread persecution of the early believers by the Roman authorities
was the occasion of the "fiery trial" (1 Peter 4:12). Peter exhorts the readers
of his letter to a life of purity, of godly living, and exhorts them to steadfastness and faithfulness.
He specifically counsels:
1. to steadfastness and perseverance under persecution 1 Peter 1:1 - 2:10 2. to the practical duties of a holy life 1 Peter 2:11 - 3:13 3. he refers to the example of Christ to encourage the development of patience and holiness 1 Peter 3:14 - 4:19 4. he concludes with advice to the spiritual leaders and to people themselves 1 Peter 5:1-14
