Some commentators refer to Joel as the "Prophet of Pentecost," since his prophecy of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Joel 2:28) is quoted by Peter (Acts 2:16) as being fulfilled at Pentecost.
The backdrop to Joel’s prophecy was a devastating plague of locusts and he (like many other prophets) assigns disasters like this at the door
people’s sin and apostasy. However, Joel gives the people literally a “wake-up call” (see Joel 2:1) to their situation and calls on the people of Judah to repent, promising that a change in their behavior will result in their forgiveness and the restoration of their land
in both material and spiritual blessings.
